Hi SWANA! SWANA is now accepting submissions for its 2021 Safety Awards . In your interactions with members, Chapters and Technical Divisions, please mention the program as appropriate. Obviously we want to get as many submissions as possible. Public and private sector solid waste organizations can apply for consideration in one of three categories - Best Safety Innovation , Biggest Safety Improvement , or COVID-19 Response . This third category was added this year to honor outstanding efforts to protect workers and the public during the pandemic. There is no fee to enter, but the applicant must be a SWANA member. DOT 12 Hour Logs

2 people recommend this.
Does anyone have or can send me a link to a good DOT Log Template in excel format. I have seen waste companies use these before. It can be challenging to get logs from driver's on a timely basis. Having done it this way in the past, it was easier to manage.

As part of global efforts to combat climate change and dramatically reduce global emissions, there is a lot of talk about the potential of hydrogen to replace fossil fuels at some future time. But the fact is, hydrogen is already being used for clean mobility, power generation and other applications. Hydrogen is already happening now. Get on the Hydrogen Train, Plane, Bus and more! Alstom , a European transportation company, has built a regional passenger hydrogen train called the Coradia iLint and is currently undergoing its testing phase in Lower Austria. The company has already successfully demonstrated the ...

I'm the Solid Waste Manager for the City of Port St. Lucie, Florida. We have been experiencing an ongoing problem with hydraulic oil spills and glass spills on GSP side loaders. With regards to glass spills, these trucks from my understanding weren't designed for recycling but rather, for the collection of solid waste. Is that true? The contractor is currently retrofitting these trucks to mitigate the glass spills. Regarding hydraulic oil spills, as I write this, we had a large hydraulic spill in a gated community. And I don't know why, but the gated communities seem to get the lions share of the spills. We have quite a few of them so I suppose the law of ...

Thermally-driven ammonia stripping was developed by Organics to offer an alternative route to that of pH adjustment for continuous-process ammonia stripping. With a thermally-driven stripper no chemical additions are required. I've started this blog post to gauge the interest within SWANA. If it is of interest, we'll put together a multi-part series of posts covering ammonia removal, recovery and re-use options. The single important input for the thermal ammonia removal system is waste-heat with which to drive the chemical reactions. If waste-heat is not available, the fuel-cost can be as prohibitive as that of chemical additions or carbon source requirements. ...

Hi, I have been on the municipal side of the Solid Waste industry for 17 years. I have worn many hats during this time, with the last 3.5 years being in management. There are so many challenges that we encompass each day, as many others do, I'm sure. Because the industry seems to have such a huge turnaround with drivers/helpers due to the pay and/or nature of the job, I feel it hard to build a good reliable team. We collect solid waste 5 days a week, between trash, recycle yard waste and bulk for just over 4K residents. We seem to have quite a bit of missed collections each day, drivers who call out often, drivers who just want to drive and go home and ...

Damaged Carts

Be the first person to recommend this.
With more tight budgets we are investigating repairing the cracked damaged carts at our municipality. We are looking at the plastic weld system and are wondering if anyone else has tried this, or other methods to repair carts? Has anyone had success with repairing damaged carts and if so what is the repair method used?

Masks

Just read a very nice article on SWANA ordering and distributing masks to area SW/Recycling organizations to keep them safe. Many states are now issuing mandatory face masks, Ohio included, how would I obtain free masks from SWANA to keep my employees safe?
