“If you don’t measure it, you can’t manage it” is the age old adage and words to live by according to Don Ross, who dedicates his work to advancing the science of waste collection to increase efficiencies, improve safety, and enhance recycling and waste diversion through the use of new technologies. Don is a solid waste consultant specializing in collection and transfer operations and holds a BS in Business Management. Mr. Ross has over 28 years of experience managing solid waste collection and transfer operations for both public and private sector organizations including over 13 years with Waste Management, Inc., as a Market Area Director of Operations. Don is a teacher, a manager, and a leader, and hopes his contributions help to advance the solid waste industry, considered by many as the fifth public utility.
His recent project work includes the integration of new processing technologies, including mixed waste processing into solid waste systems, automated collection conversion planning and implementation, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) data collection system design, collection and transfer system analysis and improvement strategies, route optimization, rate studies, compressed natural gas (CNG) implementation, and franchise contracting and transition planning. Don believes that new technology can improve solid waste operations for the men and women in the industry as well as the customers they serve, and is committed to that endeavor.
