Extreme Couponing Causing Headaches for MRFs?

By Jessica Haislip posted 06-22-2011 09:37 AM

Have you heard of that new show on TLC, "Extreme Couponing?"  I watched half an episode a few weeks ago and was reminded of the extreme lengths some people will go to save a buck - or much more than that apparently.  Some of the people on the show, who were participating in this extreme couponing, saved hundreds of dollars on their grocery bills.  Of course, they also ended up with 10 bottles of ketchup, 12 jars of pickles, six bottles of shaving cream... you get the idea.  Many coupons require bulk purchases to receive those discounts.

So what does this crazed couponing phenomenon have to do with SWANA?  Well, some of our members have brought to our attention that this is having an impact on them.  Some people who have caught the couponing fever are dumpster diving for coupons.  Well, rather... MRF diving.

So, I want to know -
  • Have you been impacted by these couponers?
  • Are there safety concerns?
  • Are there liability concerns?
  • Any other concerns?
If someone comes to your facility to retrieve coupon-containing newspapers out of a bin and holds his/her child upside down in the bin to retrieve the newspapers, is that a problem?

If someone gets hurt climbing on a receptacle in your facility, are you liable for their injuries?

Let me know what you think!  I'm curious to know how (or if) this phenomenon may be affecting you.
