Earth Day Plans in Tucson, AZ

The City of Tucson is making big changes to it's curbside recycling program beginning July 1, 2012. Earth Day is the perfect time to begin spreading the news! On Saturday, April 21st, the Tucson Environmental Services Department will be a community partner in sponsoring the Tucson Earth Day Festival. In addition to being a co-sponsor, Environmental Services will have a booth at the event to announce the expansion of the curbside recycling program.

In 2011, the City requested proposals for a new Materials Recycling Facility and awarded the contract to ReCommunity (Hudson-Baylor). Construction is underway and beginning July 1, 2012, Tucson residents will be able to recycle more! The new sta
te-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is modernizing and simplifying recycling. Tucson residents and businesses will now be able to recycle a wider variety of material than ever before – especially plastics. The new MRF will accept any plastic containers making recycling even easier. There’s much less sorting and confusion about what can go into the Blue Barrel-- no more having to throw away the previously unaccepted plastics like butter tubs, yogurt containers and produce clamshells.

To get the news out, Environmental Services will be unveiling our new recycling campagn "Look What's New with Do More Blue", handing out magnets and a new brochure announcing the changes. The magnet provides a quick reference for Tucson recyclers so they can quickly see what goes in their blue barrel. We'll be playing some games and giving out prizes to families taking the time to celebrate Earth Day. We're looking forward to increased diversion rates and helping our residents by making recycling simple and convenient!
