Interactive Workshop: Safety Improvements at the City of Clearwater

8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

ABSTRACT:
This event will begin with a presentation by Earl Gloster, director of Solid Waste and General Services for the City of Clearwater, Florida. He will discuss some of the safety challenges faced within his department based upon input from his staff. This will be the case study upon which the rest of the event will be based. Safety issues to be discussed include:

- Backing
- Shortcuts/speeding to get the job done.
- Decision making/judgment
- Distracted driving/cell phone-texting

After the presentation, using the Interview Matrix format, session attendees will break out into small groups and consider solutions to the safety problems posed during Earl’s presentation. This portion will be led by Jennifer Brown, business strategist for City of Calgary Waste and Recycling. Through one-on-one and group discussion, this event will open up a dialogue about the most important issue in the industry: safety.

BIO:
Earl Gloster is the Director of Solid Waste/General Services for the City of Clearwater and has been a member of SWANA since 2007. In addition to his regular duties, Earl is a member of the Pinellas County Technical Management Committee and chairs the SWANA Sunshine chapter Collection and Transfer committee. A native of Miami Florida and retired Air Force veteran, he is also the current President of the Tampa Bay chapter of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators. Earl is married to Karen and they have two children Earl II and Jade and two grandchildren.

BIO:
Jennifer Brown works with the City of Calgary Waste and Recycling Collections division as a business strategist. Formally educated in urban planning, her work has extended across municipal governments both small and large, each position focussing on collaboration and engagement across lines of business including planning, development and business licencing, safety codes and most recently waste and recycling. In addition to her work with the City of Calgary, Jennifer is a member of the Canadian National Track and Field Development team specializing in discus and continues to train towards Rio 2016.
