This session will offer multiple perspectives on fires in the solid waste industry. Larry Stone of Waste Pro will look at several case studies of landfill fires and what they can teach us about best practices, prevention, and planning. From the composting and mulch side of things, Rise Weinberger of Weinberger & Associates, Inc., will explain how to prevent and control fires in those locations. And Mark Hart of Training Consultants Inc. will look further in-depth at landfill fires, hot loads, tire fires and more.

Larry Stone began working for Waste Pro USA early in 2013. Prior to coming to Waste Pro, he had worked in the waste industry for more than 42 years, where he had held many positions, including heavy equipment operator, truck driver, sales representative, assistant general manager and general manager.

In 2004, Larry’s development of the national “Slow Down To Get Around” campaign earned him the National Solid Wastes Management Association’s Member of the Year Award. Larry’s safety program is currently in place in hundreds of municipalities around the United States, including Cincinnati, Orlando, Dallas and New York. His dedication to safety within the waste and recycling industry also earned him the 2012 Safety in Motion Award from Preco Electronics. He also serves as the vice president and chaplain for the ‘Fire and Iron Station 2’, a National Fire Fighters Motor Cycle Club.

Risa Weinberger is a licensed Professional Engineer and owns a consulting firm specializing in solid waste, particularly composting and organics diversion. She has practiced engineering as a consultant to the solid waste and composting industry nation-wide for 36 years.

Risa holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Vanderbilt University in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering. She also holds a Class A Solid Waste License in Texas, and is a SWANA-Certified Composting Systems Manager. She represents the composting industry on the solid waste advisory body to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. She is co-author and instructor of the composting certification course offered by SWANA, and an instructor for SWANA’s Organics Collection course, e-training courses, and other training for various solid waste and environmental organizations. She has trained numerous compost facility operators and fire fighters regarding the unique characteristics of fires at compost facilities throughout Texas and in Utah.

Mark Hart, the President of Training Consultants Inc., has over 18 years of waste management experience, including several years as a regional manager of private sector recycling and disposal operations. His facilities have been recognized for innovative recycling and environmental protection, and Orange County, Florida recognized them for "Environmental Excellence" on two occasions. He has worked throughout the United States, Mexico and Central America. He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras from 1988 to 1990, teaching small business management and working with people with physical disabilities. He is fluent in Spanish and earned an MBA from the University of Central Florida in 1999. His specialties include Operations Management, OSHA Safety and Health Training, Process Improvement, Safety Training Program Implementation, and Bilingual English/Spanish Training Programs.
