Potentially dangerous gases like methane (CH4) , carbon dioxide (CO2) , sulfides , and ammonia , are created by the decomposition and evaporation of organic compounds as well as chemical reactions between waste components
Dangerous gases like methane (CH 4 ), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), sulfides (SOx), and ammonia , are created by the decomposition and evaporation of organic compounds, as well as chemical reactions between waste components. Methane and carbon dioxide are the most prevalent, making up between 90 and 98% of all gases and VOCs released.
Leachate collection systems and pumps fail in several known ways. Chemical reactions leading to calcium carbonate scale and the clogging of pipes and pumps is the root cause in almost all landfills
The U.S. EPA Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) is collaborating with SWANA to organize a panel at the 40th Annual Landfill Gas and Biogas Symposium

Effect on Solid Waste Operations This change would defer the permitting of carbon dioxide emitted from the burning of landfill methane either in a flare, furnace or engine. However, EPA considers methane to be anthropogenic and the deferral would not apply to landfill methane emissions that exceed the thresholds
The single important input for the thermal ammonia removal system is waste-heat with which to drive the chemical reactions. If waste-heat is not available, the fuel-cost can be as prohibitive as that of chemical additions or carbon source requirements
Special thanks to Bob Watts and his team from Chester County Solid Waste Authority (Lanchester Landfill) for creating this 'chilling' video about the importance of attending SWANApalooza and its 5 events in New Orleans from March 16-19: The Road to Zero Waste , Landfill and Landfill Gas & Biogas Symposia, the U.S. EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program Workshop and SWANA's spring Training & Exam Center
This partnership between the Brazilian regulators and NARUC is funded through a grant from the US EPA under the Global Methane Initiative. This initiative is an agreement between thirty-eight governments around the globe to pool resources to develop clean energy while creating stronger economies
