Jim Miller is a trusted advisor and industry leader in the design and implementation of process-driven facilities, particularly in the solid waste industry. His primary focus is organic waste processing facilities, and his range of expertise includes transfer stations, MRF’s and other solid waste facilities. Jim has made significant contributions to a wide range of facilities that align economy and sustainability with operational functionality and efficiency to minimize life-cycle costs and achieve long-term success.
After spending five years as an engineer specializing in design-build of industrial facilities and two years as a plant engineer for an aerospace components manufacturer, Jim founded J.R. Miller & Associates (JRMA) in 1982. JRMA now has five regional offices and over 60 staff members. The company has gained recognition from various architectural, engineering and industry associations, including AIA and NSPE.
Jim is a frequent speaker at conferences and webinars for organizations such as the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), NWRA (Waste Expo) and the Environmental Research and Education Foundation. In addition, he has been a guest lecturer on solid waste management topics at the University of California, Los Angeles; California Polytechnic University, Pomona; the University of Southern California; and the University of California, San Diego. He has also written, edited, and contributed to many articles in industry publications.
Mr. Miller has been recognized many times for his industry contributions and has received numerous awards including the Civil Engineering Career Achievement Award from the University of Kentucky, 2011; Distinguished Member of the California Society of Professional Engineers, 2013; and Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, 2018. He has served as the Director of the Collection and Processing Division of the Solid Waste Association of North America and is currently the division’s legislative liaison.
