Flow Measurement Pitfalls on Landfill Gas

By Raymond Young posted 03-12-2014 11:10 AM

Our service engineers have visited many sites around the country as well as talked to many people over the phone on common issues where the flow measurement of landfill gas has been compromised. A couple of things that can be verified before calling in for service and are pretty simple to check in the field are:
  • Flow Meter facing correct direction. Our flow meters all come marked with a flow indication arrow as to the direction of the flow against the meter.  We have found that in some cases the meter has been turned accidentally during the installation or cleaning process. It is critical that when the meter is inserted into the pipeline that it has proper orientation with regards to the flow.  Please contact us with any questions on proper orientation.
  • Secondly, the meter must be inserted far enough into the line for proper measurement to occur. Our instruction manuals indicate the precise distance that a flow meter must be inserted into the line in order for the sensors to accurately measure the fluid that is going past the meter.
  • Insure the meter is inserted into the proper line size. Our flow meters are calibrated to a specific size line and insuring that the meter is in the correct line will impact flow measurement. Our meters have functionality built in where as a line size can be changed, but it is critical to make sure that it is in the right place to start.

Hope these tips were useful and please feel free to contact us at Thermal Instrument Company if you have additional comments, questions, or flow measurement needs in the future.
